Tiles = area ÷ ((tile width + joint) × (tile height + joint)) × (1 + waste)
Including the grout joint in the tile footprint is what separates an accurate estimate from a short order. A 10% waste allowance suits straight layouts; use 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and 20% for rooms with many cuts. Always buy full boxes from a single batch so shade lots match.
