What unit pricing tells you
Unit price is the total price of a package divided by the quantity it contains, expressed against a single common measure such as one kilogram, one litre, one hundred grams or one item. Reducing every candidate product to that common measure is the only reliable way to compare packages that differ in size, shape or count, because shelf prices alone reward whichever manufacturer chose the smaller container. The comparator normalises mixed units for you, so a 750 ml bottle, a 1.5 litre bottle and a six-pack of 330 ml cans can be ranked against one another directly.
Where bulk buying stops paying
Larger packages usually carry a lower unit price, but not always: promotional multipacks, premium formats and convenience sizes frequently invert the pattern, and retailers periodically discount the mid-size format below the family size. Bulk also has hidden costs. Perishable goods bought in quantity that exceeds what you consume before the use-by date have an effective unit price higher than the label suggests, because the wasted portion still has to be paid for. A useful rule is to multiply the unit price by the share you realistically expect to use, then compare that adjusted figure across options.
Reading labels accurately
Check whether the declared quantity is net weight or drained weight, since canned goods often list both and the drained figure is the one you eat. Watch for products sold by count where individual items vary in size, and for concentrated formats where the correct comparison is per prepared serving rather than per package. In many jurisdictions retailers are legally required to display unit pricing on shelf labels, but the reference unit differs by product class, so re-deriving the figure yourself remains the safest check.
