Nominal vs actual lumber sizes
Board feet are billed on nominal dimensions, but a “2 × 4” actually measures 1.5 × 3.5 inches after surfacing and drying (US PS 20 standard). Use nominal figures above for pricing and actual figures for framing layout.
| Nominal (in) | Actual (in) | Actual (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × 2 | 0.75 × 1.5 | 19.0 × 38.1 |
| 1 × 4 | 0.75 × 3.5 | 19.0 × 88.9 |
| 1 × 6 | 0.75 × 5.5 | 19.0 × 139.7 |
| 2 × 2 | 1.5 × 1.5 | 38.1 × 38.1 |
| 2 × 4 | 1.5 × 3.5 | 38.1 × 88.9 |
| 2 × 6 | 1.5 × 5.5 | 38.1 × 139.7 |
| 2 × 8 | 1.5 × 7.25 | 38.1 × 184.1 |
| 2 × 10 | 1.5 × 9.25 | 38.1 × 234.9 |
| 2 × 12 | 1.5 × 11.25 | 38.1 × 285.8 |
| 4 × 4 | 3.5 × 3.5 | 88.9 × 88.9 |
| 6 × 6 | 5.5 × 5.5 | 139.7 × 139.7 |
Formula
Board feet = thickness(in) × width(in) × length(ft) ÷ 12
One board foot equals 1/12 ft³ = 0.002359737216 m³ = 2.359737216 litres.
