Understanding the Gaz (Yard)

The gaz is the South Asian yard: in modern Indian and Pakistani textile trade it is taken as equal to the imperial yard, 0.9144 metres exactly. Historically it was anything but fixed, and pre-metrication documents use gaz values that differ from the yard by up to a third.
Standardised by convergence, not by decree
The modern equivalence of gaz and yard is a trade convention rather than a statutory definition. Colonial-era textile commerce imported bolt widths and lengths measured in yards, and the local gaz was progressively read as the same length because that was what the cloth arriving in the market actually measured.
That convergence is now near-total in the retail cloth trade of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh: fabric is cut by the gaz, and the gaz on the shop counter is a yardstick. For any contemporary textile transaction the yard equivalence is safe.
The historical gaz was much larger
The Mughal gaz-i-Ilahi established under Akbar was around 0.81 to 0.82 metres, and later Shahjahani and regional gaz values ranged from roughly 0.68 to over 1.0 metres depending on period and province. Persian and Central Asian gaz values differ again. A gaz figure in a revenue record, an architectural specification or a land survey from before the nineteenth century cannot be treated as a yard.
This matters most in architectural history. Mughal building proportions expressed in gaz resolve into clean modular ratios only when the correct period gaz is used; applying the yard produces awkward fractions that have misled more than one reconstruction.
Textile practice today
Cloth is sold by running length, so the gaz measures length along the bolt while width is a separate figure quoted in inches or centimetres. A "3 gaz" purchase of 44-inch fabric and of 58-inch fabric yield very different amounts of material, and garment yardage charts assume a specific width.
Wholesale trade increasingly quotes in metres for export and in gaz for domestic sale, so the same consignment may carry both. Since the two differ by about 8.6 per cent, a mismatch between the export packing list and the domestic invoice is usually this conversion rather than a shortfall.
Related length units
The hath (cubit) is conventionally half a gaz, about 0.457 metres, and remains in use for rough measurement in construction and tailoring. The girah, one-sixteenth of a gaz, is the traditional fine subdivision for cloth and corresponds to about 5.7 centimetres.
For land, the gaz appears squared as a unit of area in some older urban records, particularly in Pakistani cities where plot areas were once quoted in square gaz — a figure very close to, but not identical with, the square yard used in the same records. Where both appear, take the square yard as the operative one for registration.
Tailoring practice adds one more wrinkle worth knowing. Traditional garment charts specify cloth requirements in gaz for a given size and style, and those charts assume both a bolt width and a cutting layout. Converting the chart figure to metres is straightforward; reproducing the garment from a bolt of different width is not, because the layout may no longer nest. When sourcing fabric against an old chart, convert the area required rather than the running length, then check it against the width actually available.
Shrinkage is the last variable that a length conversion cannot capture. Unwashed cotton and handloom fabric commonly lose two to five per cent on first wash, so a cutting length converted exactly from gaz to metres can still fall short of the finished garment. Traditional charts often quietly include an allowance; metric conversions of them usually do not.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Only the modern trade gaz equals a yard; Mughal and Persian gaz values differ by up to a third.
- Cloth quantity depends on bolt width as well as gaz length.
- Square gaz in older urban land records is not interchangeable with the registered square-yard figure.
