Where 2,400 square feet came from

The ground is a building-plot convention rather than a survey unit. It reflects the size of plot that Madras Presidency layouts were platted at — large enough for a detached house with a compound, small enough to sell in quantity. The figure was fixed at 2,400 ft² and stayed there, with no relationship to the chain-and-acre arithmetic that produced the guntha and the cent.

That independence is the whole difficulty. One ground is 5.5096 cents and 0.055 acre; forty grounds are 8.9187 acres, not nine. Every conversion involving the ground produces a repeating decimal, so figures quoted to two places are always rounded.

How Chennai actually trades
