The kos is the traditional South Asian measure of road distance — roughly the distance at which a call carries, later formalised by Mughal road-building and colonial survey practice. It is the unit behind the kos minar milestones that still stand along the Grand Trunk Road.
A distance defined by travel, not geometry
Unlike the gaz or the hath, the kos was never primarily a measuring unit; it was a travel unit describing a stage of a journey. Values quoted in historical sources vary widely because terrain, road quality and local convention all fed into what counted as one kos.
Mughal administration imposed order by building physical markers at fixed intervals, and later British survey work associated the kos with a value close to two miles. That is the figure used here, chosen because it is the one most consistently attested in survey-era documents rather than because the kos was ever truly uniform.
Country context: the Grand Trunk Road and after
The surviving kos minars between Delhi, Agra and Lahore are the most tangible evidence of the unit, and archaeological measurement of the intervals between them is the best empirical check on any quoted value. Those intervals are not perfectly even, which is itself informative about how the standard was applied in practice.
The word remains alive in Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Nepali speech for a vaguely defined middle distance, and in place names across northern India and Pakistan. Modern signage is entirely metric, so any present-day use is idiomatic rather than navigational.
Interpreting distances given in kos
Historical itineraries quoted in kos should be read as travel estimates, and a converted kilometre figure inherits that uncertainty. Comparing the total against the actual road distance between the endpoints is usually the fastest way to sanity-check which kos a source is using.
For scholarly work the defensible presentation is a range with the assumed value named, exactly as with other travel-derived units. Presenting a single kilometre figure to three decimals implies a precision the source never had.
Travel units and what they really measure
The kos belongs with the league, the farsakh and the Japanese ri: units that answer "how far is it to walk" rather than "how long is this line". Such units cluster around an hour or so of travel, which is why they land in a similar range across unrelated cultures despite having no shared origin. The apparent coincidence is a fact about human walking speed, not about measurement.
This origin explains their behaviour. A kos through hills is shorter on the ground than a kos across plains, because the unit is tracking effort and time. Historical travellers understood this perfectly well and their itineraries are internally consistent even when the implied kilometre values are not.
When converting, the useful output is therefore a distance plus a note about terrain where the source allows. A reader trying to understand a historical journey is better served by "roughly two miles per kos across the plains, less in the hills" than by a single figure carried to two decimal places.
The kos minars remain the best public evidence of all this, and they are worth seeing. Standing between two of them is a more direct explanation of what the unit meant than any table can offer: the interval is a stage of a journey, marked in brick because the road mattered enough to measure.

- Kos minar spacing is uneven, so it validates the order of magnitude rather than a precise value.
