The masha is the twelfth part of the tola and the working sub-unit of the South Asian gold counter. It survives because jewellers in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh still describe stone weights, wastage and making charges in tola-masha-ratti even when the invoice totals in grams.
Where the value comes from
The masha inherits its definition from the tola rather than from any object of its own. Colonial Indian coinage fixed the tola at 180 troy grains, and the bazaar convention of twelve masha to the tola turns that into fifteen grains per masha. Because the troy grain has been defined against the kilogram since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, the masha is a derived but fully traceable value, not a folk approximation.
That derivation is why the number looks awkward in grams. There is no round metric target the masha was ever meant to hit; it is a duodecimal slice of a coin standard, and any attempt to tidy it to a friendly figure introduces error the trade will notice on gold.
Country context: how the masha is actually used
In Indian and Pakistani jewellery shops the masha is a pricing and description unit rather than a weighing unit. The scale reads grams to three decimals; the shopkeeper converts to tola and masha out loud because customers negotiate in that vocabulary. In Nepal the same subdivision appears alongside the bhari, and in Bangladesh it sits under the local bhari-ana-rati ladder used for wedding gold.
The unit is also common in older probate and dowry documents. Inventories written before metrication list ornaments in tola-masha-ratti with no gram equivalent, so valuers converting an estate today are effectively reading a duodecimal ledger and must apply the sub-unit ratios rather than a single blanket factor.
Reading a tola-masha-ratti quote correctly
A quote such as "2 tola 7 masha 3 ratti" is a positional number in mixed bases: twelve masha to the tola, eight ratti to the masha. It is not decimal. Treating the masha figure as a fraction of ten is the single most common arithmetic failure when converting old ornament records, and it inflates or deflates the total by several percent.
The safe procedure is to reduce the whole quote to the smallest stated unit, convert once to grams, and round only at the end. Converting each component separately and summing rounded grams is where mismatched invoices come from.
Why the masha still matters commercially
It would be easy to dismiss the masha as folklore given that every legal scale in the region reads metric, but the unit does real commercial work. Making charges, wastage allowances and stone deductions are all conventionally expressed against the tola-masha ladder, so a customer who cannot follow the arithmetic in that vocabulary cannot check the bill. The unit is, in effect, the language in which the margin is negotiated.
This is also why small conversion errors are noticed. Gold is expensive enough per gram that a discrepancy of a single masha on a wedding set is a meaningful sum, far above the threshold at which a buyer will query an invoice. Precision here is a consumer-protection matter rather than a scholarly nicety, which is the reason this atlas derives the masha from the coin standard instead of rounding it to a convenient decimal.

Storing the traditional figures and converting on output accumulates rounding error across every operation, whereas a single conversion at render time does not.

- Twelve masha make a tola, not ten — decimal reading of the middle term is the classic error in ornament valuations.
- Some retail scales are calibrated to the rounded bazaar tola, which propagates a small offset into every masha figure derived from them.
- Gemstone weights in old records may be in ratti rather than masha; the two differ by a factor of eight and are easy to transpose.
- Do not use the masha for bullion settlement — contracts settle in grams or troy ounces, and the masha is a descriptive layer above them.
