Figures use the annual average Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), U.S. city average, all items, series CUUR0000SA0, published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The index base period is 1982–84 = 100. Coverage runs 1913–2025; the 2025 average is provisional until December of that year is final.
CPI measures a fixed basket of urban consumer goods and services, so it answers "what would this cost today?" — not "what would this investment be worth?". Regional prices, housing and wage growth all diverge from headline CPI, and pre-1978 methodology differs from the current series, so long-span comparisons are indicative rather than exact.
