    Pace, speed and how they relate

    Pace and speed describe the same motion from opposite directions. Pace is time divided by distance and is written as minutes and seconds per kilometre or per mile, the convention runners use because it maps directly onto what a watch shows each lap. Speed is distance divided by time, expressed in kilometres or miles per hour, and is the convention cyclists and vehicles use. To convert between them, divide sixty by the pace in decimal minutes to get speed in units per hour, and divide sixty by the speed to get pace back. A 5:00 min/km pace is therefore exactly 12 km/h, and a 10:00 min/mile pace is exactly 6 mph.

    Reading the split table

    The split table projects your entered pace across every intermediate distance of the race, which is the number most useful on the start line. Even splits assume you hold the same pace from the first kilometre to the last. In practice most personal bests are set with a slight negative split, meaning the second half is run marginally faster than the first, because starting two to five seconds per kilometre slower than target pace conserves glycogen and keeps heart rate below threshold in the opening kilometres. Use the table to memorise two or three checkpoint times rather than every split, since chasing a per-kilometre target on undulating terrain usually costs more energy than it saves.

    Course and condition adjustments

    Times are distance-exact but conditions are not. Heat above roughly 15 degrees Celsius, humidity, altitude above 1,000 metres, headwind and cumulative elevation gain all slow a given effort level. A widely used field approximation adds a few seconds per kilometre for every 100 metres of climb, partially offset on the descent. Treadmill running removes wind resistance, which is often compensated for with a one percent gradient. Because these adjustments are estimates rather than physical constants, treat the calculator output as the pure arithmetic baseline and adjust for conditions by feel and heart rate on the day.
