Understanding the Tola

The tola is the working weight of the South Asian bullion trade. It survives not as a legal unit of trade but as a pricing convention: gold in Delhi, Karachi, Kathmandu and Dubai is still quoted per tola even though every scale in the room reads grams.
Where the value comes from
The tola was fixed against the British Indian rupee coin, whose mass was set at 180 troy grains. That definition is what makes the modern figure a rational number rather than a measured average: 180 grains is exactly three-eighths of a troy ounce, and the troy ounce itself has been defined against the kilogram since 1959. Everything downstream of that — the ten-tola bar, the masha, the ratti — inherits the same chain.
Because the anchor is a coin standard rather than a physical prototype, the tola never drifted the way agricultural units did. A jeweller in Lahore and a refiner in Ahmedabad are working from the same number, which is unusual among the units in this atlas and is the main reason the tola remains commercially useful.
The two values you will meet in practice
Trade literature quotes both 11.6638 g (the grain-derived value) and a rounded 11.664 g inherited from bazaar practice. The gap is roughly two hundredths of a gram per tola. On a single wedding-set purchase that is invisible; across a ten-tola TT bar it is about 0.02 g, and on a container of scrap settled by weight it becomes a line item that both sides will argue about.
The practical rule used by dealers is to price in whichever value the counterparty's invoice states, and to convert once, at the end, rather than tola-by-tola. Repeated rounding at each line is the usual source of a mismatch between a buyer's and a seller's totals.
How the tola sits inside the trade
The ten-tola bar — the "TT bar" — is the physical form the unit is most often encountered in, historically cast for the Gulf-to-South-Asia gold route because it was small enough to move and large enough to be worth moving. It is still produced by Swiss and Emirati refiners today, which is why a unit abolished from statute keeps appearing on modern assay certificates.
Below the tola sit the masha (one-twelfth of a tola) and the ratti (one-eighth of a masha), used for gemstones and for very small gold work. Above it, purity is quoted in carats or in millesimal fineness, never in tola, so a full quote reads as a mass in tola and a fineness that is dimensionless.
Using tola figures in documents
Customs declarations, insurance schedules and probate inventories across South Asia and the Gulf increasingly require metric mass, so the tola figure usually needs restating in grams. Record both: the tola value preserves the original document, the gram value makes it checkable. Where a valuation is contested, the grain definition is the one that can be defended, because it is the only value with a written legal origin.
For jewellery insurance in particular, note that the tola weight of a finished piece includes solder, settings and stones. A conversion is only as good as the assay it is attached to; the arithmetic here does not tell you how much of that mass is gold.
One further documentary habit is worth adopting: when a tola figure is transcribed from a handwritten receipt, record the original numerals as written alongside the converted value. Devanagari, Gurmukhi and Eastern Arabic numerals all appear on trade slips across the region, and misreading a digit is a far more common source of error in this market than the choice between the two tola definitions.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not confuse the tola with the "tola" used for opium and other pharmacy weights in colonial records — the same word, a different scale.
- A price "per tola" is quoted on fine gold content, not gross piece weight, unless the invoice says otherwise.
- Rounding to 11.664 g line-by-line rather than once at the end is the usual cause of buyer/seller total mismatches.
