    The dhur is the smallest step in the bigha–kattha–dhur ladder of the Nepali Terai and the eastern Indian plains. It is the unit boundary disputes are actually fought over, because it is small enough to describe a strip of land a metre wide.

    One kattha is twenty dhur, and one bigha is twenty kattha, so a dhur is one four-hundredth of a bigha. In the Nepali Terai that gives roughly 16.93 m²; under the Bengal standard it is about 3.34 m²; in Bihar practice it is close to 6.32 m². As with every unit in this family, the ratio is fixed and the area is local.

Land offices in the Terai routinely record residual strips in dhur after a plot has been partitioned into whole kattha, so a holding described as "3 kattha 7 dhur" is describing a real, irregular parcel rather than a tidy rectangle.

    Why small units matter in partition

    Inheritance in the Terai divides land repeatedly among heirs, and each partition leaves a remainder that has to be expressed somehow. The dhur is what absorbs it. Over three or four generations a parent bigha can be recorded as dozens of holdings whose dhur components must sum back to the original area — and frequently do not, because each partition rounded in the direction of whoever drafted the deed.

Terai deeds are frequently the only surviving record of a family holding, and the traditional string carries information — such as the order of partition — that the metric area alone discards.

    Precision claims deserve the same care as the factor itself. A dhur in the Terai is under seventeen square metres, so quoting a converted area to four decimal places implies a survey accuracy that neither the rope nor, in many cases, the modern re-survey actually supports. One or two decimals in square metres is the honest resolution for anything derived from a traditional figure.
